Watermarks
While watermarking is not a new concept in content protection, it has faced significant challenges. Visible watermarks on images are easily removable, and traditional invisible watermarking techniques often lack robustness and tamper-resistance. In the music industry, fingerprinting technology has struggled to scale as databases must continuously grow to include an ever-expanding catalog of songs, and it fails to detect misuse at the moment of identification.
Every measure counts when it comes to protecting content authenticity. Techniques like metadata, fingerprinting, and watermarking act as additional security layers for your content.
At Mentaport, we are prioritizing metadata security through the use of C2PA and advancing cutting-edge watermarking technologies. We believe these strategies are crucial for ensuring that wherever your content is found—whether in the real world or online—it can be definitively linked back to your unique certificate.
Limitations metadatas and certificates
Metadata is used heavily in the image, audio, and video industries to inform who owns what, who does what, and how. This information is crucial for copyright, licensing, and pure identification. The biggest issue metadata has today in all industries is how easily they are removed and tampered with. New measures are needed to regenerate the metadata to protect the files.
On the other hand, certificates are great at not being tampered with. Still, the problem arises in verifying that the content presented is indeed the content associated with a given certificate. Since anyone can create a digital certificate and claim it corresponds to a particular piece of content, additional measures are necessary to link the certificate indisputably with its content.
Role of Watermark Technology
This is where Mentaport’s watermark technology becomes essential. Watermarking involves embedding a digital marker or code into the content itself (be it audio, video, or images). Each watermark is uniquely linked to its corresponding blockchain certificate and is designed to be imperceptible during normal use but detectable through specific verification software. This ensures that the content and its certificate are inseparably paired.
If the content is altered, the watermark can be checked against the blockchain record to verify its authenticity and integrity.
If the content has no metadata but a watermark, we will regenerate the metadata used when encoding the watermark.
Our watermarks are exceptionally robust, withstanding screenshots, pre-recordings, cropping, and more. This ensures that even if someone encounters just eight seconds of a song or a small fragment of your image, it can still be traced back to you.
Image Watermarks
Our image watermarks have been crafted to survive screenshots, cropping, size manipulations, and more. When creating a watermark, we take high-resolution images in PNG and JPG formats.
1350x1800, 1620x1080, 1920x1080, 1080x1920, 1920x1920 (pixels)
Audio Watermarks
Our audio watermarks have been crafted to survive cropping, recording, editing, and more. When creating a watermark, we take audio files in formats of mp3, mp4 and wav.
More image and audio format support is coming soon, including 3D assets and video.
